Data User’s seminar Dehradun

A three-day National Level Data Users’ Seminar for over 100 senior secondary school teachers and 50 students from Uttarakhand was held in Dehradun from 25 to 27th July 2010.

The Data Users’ Seminar was the first seminar of its kind being held in the city with a view to enable capacity building of teachers by covering subjects like disaster management, earthquakes, adolescent health and gender, forests, hydrology, data on disasters, GIS training, energy conservation and more. Inaugurating the Seminar, Padamshri Dr B Bhattacharjee, Member, National Disaster Management Authority, laid stress on the importance of sensitisation among school children towards precaution against disasters. Dr M Sudhakar, Adviser, Ministry of Earth Sciences, called for reaching out with scientific and accurate information to teachers and students and also upheld the need for detailed and hands-on workshops.  He said teachers held much importance as they can turn the society by moulding the lives of the younger generation. Major General, Manoj Tayal, Additional Director General of Survey of India, and Dr Saraswati Raju, Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, were other speakers at the inaugural session of the Seminar. Among those who prominently participated in the sessions included Dr AK Mahajan, scientist at Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, Dr Piyoosh Rautela, Executive Director, DMMC, Dehradun; Dr S Srinivasan, MD, Apollo, New Delhi; Dr Saibal Dasgupta, CEO and Principal Conservator of Forests, Madhya Pradesh; Dr S K. Jain, Professor, IIT, Roorkee; Dr A K Bhatia, Regional Director, CGWB, Dehradun; Shri Anil Kumar Sinha, Chairman, GFDR, New Delhi and VC, Bihar State Disaster Management Authority, Dr A K Biyani, Professor, DBS College, Dehradun; Dr P L N Raju, Senior Scientist, IIRS, Dehradun; Dr Sarfaraz Alam, Assistant Professor, BHU, Varanasi; Dr M N Joshi, Professor, DBS College, Dehradun; Dr K D Gupta, Director, IASRD, New Delhi; Shri A K Tyagi, Chief Project Officer, UREDA; Shri Arvind Kumar, GM, UJVNL; Dr Lokesh Jain, Sr Fellow, TERI and Ms Sulagna Chattopadhyay, President, LIGHTS and Editor, GnY. The seminar familiarised teachers with data and trained them to use it effectively as a teaching tool. The seminar was organised by Learning in Geography, Humanities, Technology and Science (LIGHTS) and supported by the NRDMS, Department of Science and Technology, National University of Educational Planning and Administration, National Disaster Management Authority, Ministry of Non-Renewable Energy, Ministry of Earth Sciences and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation with Geography and You (G’nY) as its knowledge partner.
