The Ganga is the holiest river of India. It is also the fifth most polluted river in the world. The Indian government has taken many initiatives to clean up the Ganga but they all have propelled into the void.

In a recent development in the field, the Israeli government has offered its expertise to help clean the Ganga under Modi’s three-year “Namami Ganga” project. In a recent meeting, Israel’s Head of Economic and Trade Mission, Yonatan Ben-Zakenrevealed that Israel is interested in lending its rich knowledge, technical expertise and also technology for the project.

“We have already met the Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti and the concerned Secretary few times, we want to be involved. We offered our knowledge, technology and technical know-how (for the project).” He was quoted saying a local daily. A delegation of water expertswill also visit India next week.

Israel is at the forefront of water conservation and recycling and is, today, considered as a water superpower. It is because of its expertise that they were able to survive a major water crisis following years of drought that took place in their country. The steps taken during that time have been emulated by other countries as well.

The contamination of the Ganga happens at two levels. One is the industrial waste that is dumped into the river and the other is the individual contamination which happens due to sanitation and other activities. The Ganga passes through 29 cities and gets contaminated at almost every section.

Israel is India’s largest arms supplier. With the passage of time experts expect more collaborations between the two countries.
