Dear readers
You will agree that issues of population and migration have somehow always dodged the headlines in India till the recent attacks on Indians in Australia have forced everyone to sit up. Our team proposed that we publish a series of article to capture the dimensions of both internal as well as international migration, cross-cut with aging concerns, to enable our readers comprehend the state of affairs in the country today and make informed decisions about their future. Young India finds opportunities abroad indeed attractive. They want to study, work and live in affluent nations and be a part of their development process. Substantive evidence of such trajectories is presented in Dr B Khadria’s very balanced interview and subsequent highlights of the India Migration Report 2009.
This year we have something new for you. In my recent visit to UK, I was fortunate to meet renowned academicians from various universities and colleges. In an effort to bring before the Indian audience concerns that are being studied internationally, I requested for their current works. In response, they not only forwarded articles but also adapted it for our readers. Thus, we have three papers by Dr P Raghuram, Dr V Desai and Dr Sian Sullivan in the current issue. The following issues of 2010 will continue to carry works of academicians world over and showcase their observations about developing nations with special reference to India. However, this issue of G’nY would have been incomplete without Dr R Bhagat’s work on internal migration in India and I extend very warm thanks to him for taking out time for us at such a short notice.
