The need to find value from what we have been uncaringly discarding, is now more pertinent that it ever was. In a country that is increasingly moving towards automation in every sector, protection of livelihoods and augmenting income for the end-user is a pre-requisite to a buoyant economy. We are aware that the employment opportunities are inadequate and farm income needs bolstering. Science and technology can overthrow this downward spiral by being a catalyst, an instrument that can assist the increase in earning capacities of individuals. Science from time immemorial has been helping to improve the productivity in primary sectors. It has brought into existence the secondary and tertiary sectors, and in a way has also contributed to global warming and resource depletion. However, to use a Bengali adage ‘kanta diye kanta tulte hobe’, restorative science—a science that helps bolster economies, can help liability transform into sustainability. The G’nY, Jan-Feb issue is an exploration of this process. It showcases numerous technologies that create wealth from waste as also brings to light environmentally benign innovations that help increase incomes of rural India. Enjoy.
