The Earth System Science Organisation-Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has emerged, in the ten years of its existence, with a robust network, that continually  builds and operates a knowledge and technology enterprise for public safety and socio-economic benefit to the nation. The MoES was established in 2006 with the merging of meteorology, ocean development and operational seismology activities—the sole purpose being holistically improving forecast of weather, climate and various natural hazards.

We have now prepared a vision document for next 15 years—up to 2030, keeping in view the social goals set out globally in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 7-year Strategy Document as a part of the ‘National Development Agenda’ and 3-Year Action Document aligned to the predictability of financial resources during the
14th Finance Commission Award Period.

Over the past decade, the quality of weather, climate, ocean and seismological services have been improved with systematic efforts in augmenting atmospheric, coastal and ocean survey, geophysical observations, polar research, developing adequate modelling strategy and investing in human resources development. There is a considerable scope for further accelerating these initiatives to enable the country to become a world leader in high quality service. We envisage a leadership role in providing all possible earth sciences services to developing countries in Asia and Africa.

The July 27, 2016 Foundation Day of the MoES marks the completion of its ten glorious years. This publication is a candid microcosm of some of the efforts that MoES is making towards transforming the lives for the better for multitude of Indians through the use of science.
