GnY Live Series 2: Building Educated India
India’s education system, one of the largest in the world with over 260 million students, is at a critical juncture. While NEP 2020 aspires to revolutionize learning through multidisciplinary education, skill development, and digital learning, its implementation presents both opportunities and challenges.
The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023 highlights the urgent need for foundational learning improvements—over 50% of Class 5 students struggle to read a Class 2 text, and only 25% of Class 10 students can solve basic division problems. Meanwhile, the World Bank (2022) reports that learning poverty in India—children unable to read at age 10—stands at 55%, signaling gaps that need immediate attention.
Higher education and employability also remain key concerns. Despite India’s expanding university network, the India Skills Report 2023 indicates that only 46.2% of graduates are considered employable, pointing to a need for curriculum reform, industry linkages, and skill-based training. The NEP 2020 aims to bridge this gap through flexible learning pathways, vocational education, and digital initiatives, but questions remain on equitable access, teachers’ training, and implementation.
Join us as we navigate the complexities of India’s education system, uncover the gaps in policy and practice, and explore pathways to create a more inclusive, effective, and future-ready learning environment.
