I am from Patna. We were aware that Kala-azar is a disease that affects the area that we I ive in. Yet its extent was not known to me. I found myself counting at least four people around me who were or had been affected by kala-azar.l am grateful to G&Y for making me aware of the gravity of the problem that is endemic to my area.

Lansdowne for Natural Beauty

This is regarding the article 'A Tranquility called Lansdowne' by Dr. N. Prasad. My salute to the author (Geography and You, Vol. 6, No. 7&8). The article is quite beautiful but lacks mention of many beautiful spots of Zehrikhal and Lansdowne. It is not only an 'army cantonment area' and a few British Raj buildings - it is much more than that. The beautiful spots of the Mall Road, Kalon Danda forest and Asla's densely groomed pine forests above the Zehrikhal Hillock are a few to mention. Lansdowne is not popular for its bungalows but for its natural beauty. The Lissimatia puntata, Varbascum longifoliam, two species of orchids, and many epiphytes are found there. There are several terrestrial orchids too! It is a nature's peaceful paradise. Although, I belong to Pauri but I studied upto graduation in Lansdowne in 1976 and later shifted to Dehradun for higher education. From college life, I was reporting for Hindustan Daily, National Herald, Dharm Yuga and Amar Ujala. I have written 35 books for universities and colleges of the country till now.

I read the article 'A Tranquility called Lansdowne' and was mesmerized. I have been to almost all the hill stations in Uttaranchal, but had no idea that Lansdowne, which is in fact closest to Delhi would be so beautiful. Thanks for introducing Lansdowne to me.

It is fairly obvious that backward tribes and poor communities easily support Naxal movement as the promises made by them are enticing to say the least. This is a well established fact and is hardly typical of the Koyas. Perhaps your article on the Koyas need to be a little more substantive evidence before you can carry entire stories on their leanings.

PMGSY in trouble

The article 'Ruined by Roads: PMGSY in trouble' is really shocking. The eye opening account shows how state governments treat central funds. Funds meant for roads are used in construction of office building and repair and what not. This clearly shows that our federal structure of governance has failed.

After reading the article 'Ruined by Roads: PMGSY in trouble', G&Y (July-August 2006), I know why Central Schemes are mostly a failure. I think CAG should be given statutory powers and a charge sheet can be filed based on their reports . It is absolutely criminal to play around with public money. In the present case both Central Government and the state governments are equally at fault.
