This is reference to your article “Bimaru States Vs India’s Growth”, published in Jan-Feb-2006 issue of G&Y, which debated all parameters in reference to the acronym BIMARU. I would like to bring to your notice that you need to update yourself as even the government has shifted from using the terminology BIMARU states to EAG states. The EAG states are the 18 Empowered Action Group states in the country, which includes Orissa, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, UP, Uttaranchal, the eight NE states and Jammu& Kashmir. The EAG states are those that have very poor socio-demographic indicators such as those related to child health, maternal health, literacy, fertility etc. Example of government focus is the recent RCH (Reproductive and Child Health) programmes by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which enlists EAG states as those having several districts falling under a high fertility rate. The government seeks to put in measures to reduce the fertility rates in these districts so as to stablise the population along with providing opportunities to create a better environment for improving other related indicators such as literacy, access to better health care, infrastructure and awareness generation.

Discussing Western Disturbances in Jan-Feb. 2006 issue of Geography and You
I look for articles on climatology in G&Y and I always get very informative presentation on such issues. It is difficult to find such a brief and to the point article on western disturbances. It was truly informative without being too technical. I appreciate your effort in watering down such articles for our benefit. Keep it up.

Discussing Western Disturbances
I would like to congratulate the editor to run the cover story on Weather Anomalies in Jan-Feb 2006 issue of G&Y. The treatment to the subject was very good and lucid. Brief presentations of topics like Western Disturbances and Pierced by the cold wave in the article was very informative.

More on Antarctica
I have been an ardent reader of your magazine. I also conducted a project last year on Antarctica and found your magazine extremely useful on that count. Recently however, news about the latest expeditions and whether or not new stations have been established are missing. Kindly consider including such pieces as it is informative as well as interesting.
