The Indian upwelling zone is a rare eastern-boundary upwelling environment receiving large freshwater inputs as a result of intense rainfall in the coastal zone and in the adjoining Western Ghats. This leads to the formation of a warmer, fresher-water layer, a few metres in thickness, which floats over the cold, saline upwelled water.
